Economics: What Is It All About?
The ideas of economics have swayed the minds of kings and presidents, statements and philosophers, politicians and laymen. Its principles and practices have shaped the domestic and foreign policies of nations as well as the everyday lives of their citizens. Over its hundreds of years of existence, the discipline of economics has attracted its fair share of brilliant minds. Perhaps most significant, economics is an activity in which nearly everyone is engaged but about which relatively few have any knowledge.
Today, such knowledge is more vitally needed than ever before. For economics deals with most of the complex issues of modern society – such things as inflation, unemployment and poverty; pollution, urban decay and shortages of raw materials; taxes, monopoly, and the role of the government. Every day lecturers ask to express an opinion on them, sometimes by voting, but more often by taking part in a discussion or evaluating a current government proposal or news item. We are flooded with information and advice, some of it right and much of it wrong.
Economics helps us to form valid opinions about these crucial problems. It does not provide a fixed set of rules that guarantees solutions; no discipline or book can do that. Instead, economics provides a body of knowledge, a way of thinking, and some useful tools for understanding and coping with many of society’s ills.
Here is a modern definition of economics: Economics is a social science concerned chiefly with the way society chooses to employ its limited resources, which have alternative uses to produce goods and services for present and future consumption.
More specifically, economics describes and analyzes the nature and behaviour of an economy. The word “economy” comes from the Greek word “oikonomia”, which means the management of a household or state. We say that someone is economical when he is frugal in the expenditure of money or in the utilization of materials. When we speak of an economy (whether it is the American or the Russian economy, the economy of New England or of Chicago) we are referring to the ways in which a community manages its limited resources.
